Call for Research Initiatives
The Robert H. Arnow Center for Bedouin Studies and Development is interested in initiating
research in selected areas concerning the Negev Bedouin community.
In Education we offer research grants in the following subjects: drop-out from education and
higher education institutions; academic occupations as a correlative of professional academic
training and education; trends in applications to higher education possibilities; trends in
applications to studies abroad.
In Economics we offer research grants in the following subjects: employment and occupation;
entrepreneurship; participation of Bedouin women in the workforce. We welcome other
suggestions for research in economics.
In Public Order we offer research grants in the following subjects: crime types; explanations for
the increase of crime rate in the Bedouin society; law enforcement by legal authorities in Israel in
relation to the Negev Bedouin population; Bedouin traditional law and Israeli civil law; the
Bedouin struggle with the growing crime rate.
In Third Sector/NGOs we offer research grants in the following subjects: activities of NGOs
among the Bedouins and the relevancy of these activities to community needs; NGOs'
performance; objective assessment of NGOs in supporting people; evaluation perspectives of
Bedouins regarding NGO activities; main financial resources and NGO budget management;
voluntary work coping with questions of identity and sense of belonging among Negev Bedouins.
All senior researchers from a recognized academic institution in Israel or abroad are invited to
submit applications. You can submit only one proposal.
Proposals can be written in Hebrew or in English. The proposal should not exceed 7 pages
(including bibliography), in font size 12, with spacing of 1.5 rows and margins of 2 cm. The
proposal should include: Objectives, Scientific Background, Methodology, Budget, Stages of
Research & Time-Line, and Bibliography. In addition, short c.v.s of the senior researchers should
be enclosed, not exceeding 2 pages, including lists of publications from the past five years,. A
proposal that does not include all the above mentioned items will not be considered.
All proposals will be reviewed and judged by the Research Committee of the Center.
Final due date for proposals: May 31, 2011.

Call for grants to Bedouin students studying for advanced degrees
In order to encourage Bedouin students to continue studying for advanced degrees, the Robert H. Arnow Center for Bedouin Studies and Development announces grants to Bedouin students studying towards their advanced degrees (Master-Research Program/Doctorate) in an academic institution in Israel.
The grants are available for Bedouin students from the Negev who are in their second year or later of their Master’s or Doctorate degree. Bedouin students from all faculties may submit a request for these grants. Each applicant must mention in his/her request whether he/she is receiving any additional scholarship or financial support, and if so, its magnitude. Students are also requested to declare whether or not they are employed, and if so, the type and extent of their position.
Candidates must include in the request their transcript, a recommendation from their advisor and another recommendation from one of their lecturers. In addition, each candidate is requested to attach an approved thesis proposal.
All requests will be reviewed and judged by the Center's research committee, which will determine who is eligible for a grant.
The final deadline for submission is 28.02.2011.

Call for Research Proposals

In order to encourage research and enlarge the current compendium of knowledge on the various aspects of Arab-Bedouin society in the Negev, the Robert H. Arnow Center for Bedouin Studies and Development will award grants for research- into that society.
Each grant will not exceed $7,000. Duration of the grant will be one year. The grant can be used for basic research needs such as: payments for research assistants, purchase of relevant literature, travel expenses for presentation of the research at conferences within the country, and payment for collecting data and preparing of a concluding report.
Researchers from all disciplines and levels of seniority, from research students to senior researchers, can submit proposals upon the condition that at least one researcher will be a senior researcher belonging to a recognized academic institution or research center in Israel or abroad.
Proposals can be written in Hebrew or in English. The proposal will not exceed 7 pages, in font size 12, with spacing of 1.5 rows and margins of 2 cm. The proposal should include: Objectives, Scientific Background, Methodology, Budget, Stages of Research & Time-Line, and Bibliography. In addition, short c.v’s of research heads not exceeding 2 pages, including lists of publications from the past 5 years, should be enclosed. A proposal that does not include all the above mentioned items will not be considered.
Grant winners from 2010 are not entitled to submit a proposal for the year 2011.
All proposals will be reviewed and judged by the Research Committee of the Center.
Deadline: February 15, 2011.

Call for awards for excellence for students who completed advanced degrees on behalf of the Robert H. Arnow Center for Bedouin Studies and Development
In order to encourage excellence among Arab students from the Negev who study for advanced degrees and other students who research diverse aspects of the Arab-Bedouin society, the Robert H. Arnow Center for Bedouin Studies and Development announces three awards for students who completed their M.A./doctoral dissertation with excellence.
Two awards of $750 each are given for an M.A. thesis and one award of $1500 for a doctoral dissertation.
Arabs from the Negev who completed their studies with excellence in 2009 and received their certificate in 2010 or any other student who completed his/her degree in 2009 and their dissertation relates to Arab-Bedouin society, can apply for an award.
Candidates should submit an application which includes 1-2 pages of c.v, a summary of their M.A./doctoral dissertation and a copy of their degree.
In addition, each candidate is requested to attach a recommendation. Those who are applying for an award for their Masters degree are asked to attach a recommendation from their advisor, and those applying for an award for their doctoral dissertation are requested to attach a recommendation from one of their external readers.
All the applications will be judged by the Center's research committee , which will determine the eligible candidates.

Call for initiative research for the Robert H. Arnow Center on non-profit organizations in the Bedouin community in the Negev
The Robert H. Arnow Center for Bedouin Studies and Development is interested in initiating research on non-profit associations in the Bedouin community in the Negev. The research will examine the need for the organizations in the fields for which they were established, their success and the extent to which the Bedouin citizen appreciates the way they function.
The research will include locating relevant organizations, learning about their areas of activity and the sources of their funding, examining their administration, starting from the executive side of directing the funding to the appropriate destination, and ending with the extent of satisfaction of the Bedouin citizen who requires their assistance.
All researchers, from research students to senior researchers, are invited to submit applications. A prerequisite is that at least one researcher among those submitting a proposal is a senior researcher from a recognized academic institution in Israel or abroad.
Final due date for proposals: November 15, 2010. Proposals should be e-mailed to Bedouin@bgu.ac.il.
The researcher will be required to submit a progress report on the research within six months of starting the research. The final report will be published on the website of the Robert H. Arnow Center for Bedouin Studies and Development.
