The Ben-Gurion Archives derives its legal status from the David Ben-Gurion Law that was passed by the Knesset in 1976. In the heart of the archives are Ben-Gurion’s personal papers, diaries, and letters, all of which have been photocopied and entrusted for safekeeping at the Ben-Gurion Heritage Institute. The diaries cover Ben-Gurion's political activity in the Yishuv and Israel from the first decade of the 20th century until December 1973. Other collections have been added over the years: from the Israel State Archives, Central Zionist Archives, Labor Party Archives at Beit Berl, Jabotinsky Archives, and Labor Archives at the Lavon Institute.
When first deposited the documents amounted to over 750,000 pages. Since then the Ben-Gurion Archives has expanded five-fold. The documentation includes interviews, press clips, protocols and decisions of the main institutions of the Yishuv and Israel, and so forth.

The Ben-Gurion Archives is the southern branch of the Israel State Archives. Thus, the material comes from various government offices - much of it dealing with the development and history of the Negev.
In April 2000, a joint project of the National Academy of Sciences and the Ben-Gurion Research Institute formally inaugurated the Israeli National Science Archives at the Ben-Gurion Archives. The new addition serves a double purpose: a repository for the historical documentation of Israeli scientific enterprises, and the infrastructure for research on the interrelationship between science, technology, and Israeli society.
The Ben-Gurion Archives stands in the forefront of computer-age technologies and was a leading institution of its kind in Israel to become accessible online to a worldwide audience.
