Supporting Technologies and Infrastructure – Tools in Basic and Applied Research

The support facilities of the NIBN comprise four units – Genetics Proteomics Microscopy Bioinformatics & Computational Biology.
The first three are equipped with the technological know-how and cutting-edge instrumentation required for advanced biotechnology research, including a Polara 300 kV cryoelectron microscope, which is the only one of its kind in Israel. The Protein Crystallization Center of the NIBN is exploited by BGU researchers from a variety of disciplines in studies devoted to unraveling the functions of proteins and in drug development processes. The Genetic unit includes among other instruments the Affymetrix GeneChip Analysis System and provides technical and material support to investigators for DNA sequencing and DNA microarray analyses. The Bioinformatics Core Facility aids scientists in the design and analysis of high-throughput experiments, including quality assessment, data pre-processing, statistical analysis, functional analysis and graphical visualization. In addition, the Facility consults scientists on the assimilation of bioinformatics methodologies, such as sequence analysis and database searches, in their experimental research.
