 SIDEER Graduate Symposium 2013

The Fifth Annual SIDEER symposium will address the issue of Emergence of design in nature from different perspectives and disciplines. Nature exhibits an immense diversity of complex patterns, structures, architectures and orders. We will look into the origins of such phenomena, explore the evolutionary processes that accompany them, and discuss their future aspects.

We are pleased to announce Prof. Scott Turner as our main guest speaker. Prof. Turner's interests extends from physiological ecology to the broad patterns of evolution. He combines research from the basic levels of motion and physical structure of animals up to the emergence of complex structures and patterns to give insights on the emergence of design in nature. He has written two books on these subjects: "The Extended Organism: The Physiology of Animal-Built Structures" and  "The Tinkerer's Accomplice: How Design Emerges from Life Itself".

The symposium will take place is Sede Boqer Campus of Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Midreshet Ben Gurion, from Monday March 18th to Wednesday March 20th, 2013. Organizers of the SIDEER Annual Symposiums are graduate students. The objective of the group is to organize a topical symposium featuring a distinguished international guest of honor, and a variety of notable guest speakers from all over Israel. The first challenge of organizing such a meeting is to find a common ground for young scientists from three distinctly different fields of research. This gives the rare opportunity to bridge disciplinary boundaries and approach the most diverse topics at the forefront of scientific research from different and sometimes unusual angles.
