The Aranne Library

The Aranne Library was the first university facility to open on the Marcus Family Campus in 1973. It has grown to become a regional and university center for information and research, serving the BGU faculty, students, and staff, as well as the entire Israeli academic/research population.
This open-stack library houses a collection of approximately 950,000 bound volumes and over 10,000 periodicals, with these numbers increasing annually. Serving as a Central Library, the reading rooms on each of the 5 floors hold the collections relevant to a specific faculty: Social Sciences, Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Engineering Sciences. The Reference and Reserved collections are on the main entrance floor.
The library’s special collections include an audio-visual collection with microfiche, microfilms and videotapes; research reports and theses; a reserved book collection; an art collection; a rare books room, with rare Judaica and Islamica; the Personal Archives of Israeli authors Amos Oz and Aharon Appelfeld; and the Tuviahu Archive of Beer Sheva and the Negev.
Each floor includes separate areas designated for group-work and for quiet, individual study. There are machines for self-service book-borrowing and inexpensive photocopying self-service on the entrance floor. Library computers, conveniently spread throughout the building, offer access both to local and national collections via the “Aleph” academic/research network, and to the library’s internet website, providing access to international databases and search engines. An increasing number of full-text journal articles can be accessed online and then emailed, downloaded, or printed.
In addition to the professional librarians, who serve the public in each reading room and in the main Reference Department, the Aranne Library offers required and elective courses to students on the use of the library and its computer systems.
