Rector
Prof. Zvi HaCohen
|
Born in Cluj, Rumania in 1947. He holds a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Chemistry from Bar-Ilan University, and completed his doctorate in organic chemistry at the Weizmann Institute of Science and post doctorate at Harvard Medical School in the US.
He is incumbent of the Maks and Rochelle Etingin Chair in Desert Research at the Jacob Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research (BIDR) on the Sede Boqer campus. His main research is in the field of microalgal biotechnology, dealing with the potential of microalgae in creating polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) for pharmacological and dietary purposes. He is also involved with the issue of biofuel.
Prof. HaCohen serves as a member of the University's Intellectual Property Committee and has filled many positions at the BIDR; in addition he serves as a professional consultant to many groups and organizations in his field of research, and is a member of the editorial boards of several prestigious journals including Annals of Microbiology.
He has published dozens of scientific papers, has been awarded research grants totaling several million dollars and has a large number of patents to his name. He has edited three books, the latest being Single Cell Oils. He also serves as chairman of the Israel Senior Lecturers Union. |

Deputy-Rector
Prof. Yael Edan

Prof. Edan was appointed Deputy-Rector in 2006 after completing a 6-year period as Chair of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management. Prof.. Edan holds a BSc in Computer Engineering from the Technion; an MSc in Agricultural Engineering from the Technion, and a PhD in Engineering from Purdue University. Her main research is in robotics, sensors, simulation, and decision-making systems. Relevant research includes robotic and sensor performance analysis; robotic gripper analysis and design; systems engineering of robotic systems; robotic control of dynamic tasks; sensor selection procedures; sensor fusion; multi-robot control methodologies; telerobotics control; and human-robot collaboration methods. In addition, she has made major contributions toward the introduction and application of intelligent automation and robotic systems to the field of agriculture, with several patents. She is the incumbent of the BGU Rabbi W. Gunther Plaut Chair in Manufacturing Engineering.
As Deputy Rector, she is responsible for the quality assessment of the academic departments, the overseas study programs, and external and youth studies.

Deputy-Rector
Prof. Avishay Goldberg

Prof. Avishay Goldberg, a staff member of the Health Systems Management Department and the Emergency Medicine Department, was awarded a PhD in Health Systems Management from Ben-Gurion University and a Master's in Public Health degree at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, in the U.S.A.
He served in the Israel Defence Forces Medical Corps, his last two positions being the commander of the Military Medical Academy and Deputy Surgeon General for Administration. In 2000, he retired from the Medical Corps as a Colonel. Upon his retirement, he was appointed as the head of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Leon and Mathilda Recanati School for Community Health Professions. In 2003, he was appointed head of the Leon and Mathilda Recanati School for Community Health Professions. Since 2008, Prof’ Goldberg has been the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Head of Faculty Curriculum Committee.
Prof. Goldberg is a member of the National Council for Logistics in Health Care of the Israel Ministry of Health, and head of the Scientific Council's Committee. As a member of national committees to promote emergency preparedness in Health systems, he has initiated many programs in medical management of the health professions. He has published dozens of articles in Health Care Policy & Management and in Disaster Management in leading scientific journals.
In August 2010, Prof. Goldberg was appointed as Deputy Rector, and is responsible for academic preparation courses, the Academic Appeals Committee, and for enhancement of the Bedouin Center activities.
The Office of the Rector
The Rector’s office carries out a number of diverse activities. In addition to management of the university’s academic life, the Office of the Rector initiates events and conferences in the different fields for which it is responsible. The office also instigates activities to attract the public’s interest in the university, and makes every effort to involve the university with the community. These include conferences which are open to the general public. Activities include:

Academic Secretariat
The Academic Secretariat assists the Rector in implementing academic policy as well as the academic decisions of the Senate and other university academic committees. The Academic Secretariat is particularly responsible for the following fields:
Coordinating the academic committees of the Senate

Dealing with issues of discipline involving the academic faculty
