Intelligent Systems engineering presents a growing scientific and technological body of knowledge aimed at developing systems that resemble problem solving and learning capabilities of the brain (human brain, in particular). By its very nature Intelligent Systems research is multidisciplinary and interconnected with various paradigms, for example, artificial intelligence, machine learning, knowledge-based systems, soft computation and multi-agent systems. Intelligent Systems research and engineering have already found their way into various application fields, such as monitoring and control of industrial processes, robotics, signal and image processing, machine & computer vision, medical & diagnostic systems, financial & stock market monitoring and prediction, speech processing and synthesis, environmental monitoring, power electronics & drives, engine control and vehicle applications.

The Intelligent Systems group in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management is comprised of faculty coming from various disciplines, including industrial engineering, electrical engineering, mathematics, bio-chemistry and computer science.  Their combined expertise provides a unique advantage for research in such a multidisciplinary field.

The Intelligent Systems research facilities include four laboratories:  the Intelligent Systems Laboratory, Computer integrated Manufacturing (CIM) Laboratory, the Tele-robotics Laboratory, and the Mobile Robot Laboratory.
