Master’s Degree in Science & Technology Education
General Orientation
Science and technology education, as a discipline, investigates teaching and learning processes and provides a theoretical and practical framework for teachers’ professional development. The M.A. degree offered by the Program for Science and Technology Education at Ben Gurion University of the Negev puts, therefore, an equal emphasis on theory and practice, both in research and in teaching. The program enables teachers to observe, analyze, and deal with teaching and learning processes in their own classes deeply and comprehensively. In this way, teachers are given the opportunity to develop professionally and to become teacher-investigators who enhance their educational work with knowledge gained from their own research-based studies.
Target Population
The Program is intended for mathematics, science or technology teachers in primary schools, junior high schools and senior high schools. .
Admission Criteria
Educational background must fall into one of the following categories:
· B.A. or B.Sc. degree in Mathematics, Science or Engineering, with a grade average of at least 75.
· B.Tech degree in Engineering, with a grade average of at least 80.
· B.Ed. degree in Mathematics, Science or Technology Education, with a grade average of at least 85.
All candidates must have a teaching certificate and at least two years of teaching experience beyond their internship.
Study Tracks
The Program offers two study tracks:
· Research track (with thesis), consisting of worth 33 credits of coursework + thesis seminar.
· General track (without a thesis) , consisting of 39 credits of coursework.
Curriculum Structure
The curriculum combines advanced studies from the following three areas:
· Research on the teaching and learning of mathematics, science and technology.
· Advanced topics in the teacher’s professional discipline (mathematics, biology, physics or electrical engineering, etc.).
· History and philosophy of science and technology.
